As a second year student of architecture at Northeastern University, Robert enrolled in a summer semester study in Florence, Italy. He quickly learned that his interest in photography exceeded his interest in renaissance architecture. Soon after returning to the United States, he enrolled in every photography course he could and returned to Italy on multiple summer trips to photograph. He fell in love with Italian culture and all things Italian.

In 1993 he graduated from Northeastern University with architecture and photography as his directions of study. He returned to his studies at Cranbrook Academy in 1996 to receive his MFA in photography in 1998. His photography has been shown in both individual and group shows in the United States and Internationally, most notably a group show in New York City at the Whitney Museum.
